WEXL can trace its history back to August 19, 1926 when it appeared on the air as WAGM. The WEXL call letters, standing for "We Excel", came a few years later in 1931. In its early days, WEXL aired a variety of programming including country music. After spending a short time as a Top 40 station with limited success, WEXL transitioned to 24-hour country programming in 1963. This lead to the station's success until 1970 when it was hit with direct competition from WDEE and its hit-based country programming. In 1974, WEXL reinvented itself once again, making the move from country to Christian programming.
