WHKW (1220 AM) — branded AM 1220 The Word — is a commercial Christian radio station licensed to Cleveland, Ohio serving Greater Cleveland and much of surrounding Northeast Ohio. The station is owned by Salem Communications, and much of its programming is syndicated via the Salem Radio Network. The WHKW studios are located in the Cleveland suburb of Independence, and the station transmitter resides in neighboring Broadview Heights. WHKW began as WDBK on May 15, 1924, broadcasting with 250 watts of power. WHKW shares flagship station duties of Lake Erie Monsters hockey with WKNR, and serves as the co-flagship of Cleveland State University basketball and St. Ignatius football with sister station WHK. WHKW is also the Cleveland affiliate of Bowling Green State University football.
